A Versatile Blogger in Peru

After a week apartment hunting on the Peruvian coast, I was so surprised and ecstatic to return and find myself nominated for the Versatile Blogger Award by five of some of my best-est blogging friends! What a way to put a smile on a blogger’s face! Wow! I’m sending heartfelt thanks to:

Here’s what winning this award entails:

  • I need to pass the award on to 15 other bloggers whose blogs I’ve recently discovered.
  • I also need to share 7 things about myself.
Fifteen More Versatile Bloggers You Should Befriend
  1. Sonia Marsh at Gusty Living — Sonia is an inspiration and an expert when it comes to blogging for authors.
  2. Chris Jones at Pedestrian’s Guide to Fredericksburg — No stranger to the world of publishing and blogging, Chris has been a mentor and a great friend to me.
  3. Hilda Wong at Girl In Your World — Hilda has such a crazy sense of humor and her blog posts always make me smile.
  4. Paula at The Geeky Shopaholic — Paula is an amazing writer and a kind soul.
  5. Lynda Mee at Living Balanced Lives — I love the concept behind Lynda’s fresh, new blog.
  6. Lisa Vooght at Flash Fiction — Li is such a captivating writer of fiction and she’s one of only two fiction bloggers I regularly read.
  7. Knikkolette Church at Your Social Media Mogul — Knikki is a social media goddess and I’ve already learned so much from her in the short amount of time we’ve known each other.
  8. Adeline Yuboco at LifeAndLeisure.com — I loved Adeline the minute I met her and even more so when I found out that she blogs about my native country, the Philippines.
  9. J.D. Meier at Sources of Insight — When it comes to new ways to think about our world, J.D.’s your man!
  10. Virag Pentek at Escapist Mom — I so relate to Virag’s international life experiences.
  11. Katrina Moody at Kat’s Cafe — Not only is Kat a stellar writer, but she’s also a loving friend who makes a difference in the lives of those she meets.
  12. Meghan at Lady in Lima — Meghan’s a fellow expat in Peru who identifies with me on so many levels.
  13. Adam Sokoloff at AdamSokoloff.com — Adam is full of wisdom, insight and creativity.
  14. Evelyn Lim at Abundance Tapestry — Evelyn’s blog and life story are thoroughly inspirational.
  15. Kenya Lynem at Psychic Jazz — Kenya has such a generous spirit and her positive energy is contagious.
Seven Things You Might Not Know About This Versatile Blogger
  1. I’m proud of my Chinese name: Luy Ping Ping. My surname, Luy, means “thunder” and Ping means “ice.” Other than a stint in Chinese school when I was younger, I still haven’t had a chance to use it.
  2. My uncle taught me to float and swim in the salty Filipino ocean during one of my summer vacations. I used to visit my relatives in the Philippines every summer as a child.
  3. Autism runs in my family. One of my cousins with autism doesn’t speak. She communicates with pictures or by making noises that sound like words.
  4. I speak to my kittens in Spanish motherese. It involves a lot of the following words: “Hola” (Hi), “Bebito” (Baby) and “Amorcito” (Love). You should try saying different combinations of these words to your babies and/or pets. I know you’re trying it right now! Don’t forget to coo, use a higher pitch and draw out the vowels!
  5. Papel Higiénico

I like my toilet paper facing downward. =P

The only thing I’m anal about in my home is having the toilet paper facing downward. This way, I don’t have to look for the end. =P
  6. When I need to tell left from right, I often quickly envision my hands in my mind. The left hand can make an “L” with the forefinger and thumb when my hands are facing away from myself. Am I the only kid who was taught this strategy? =P
  7. Even though I’ve traveled quite a bit, I don’t particularly enjoy traveling or sightseeing. I prefer to make a cozy nook for myself and settle in.
Do we have anything in common? =)

  1. Incredible – I’m not a “regular” dyslexic, but I am in regards to directions, and like you, when someone says “left,” I actual have to think “ok, I write with my right hand, and that’s this one, so my other is left, and that’s over there…” (takes a whole 1-2 seconds – which is WAY longer than most people need byt the way…)

  2. Seems, like your award list is way longer! Lol, the troubles of being famous and all!;)

Thunder ice ice, what’s with the two ping… anything special about that?

I think we have nothing in common, really! Even though I haven’t travelled much, I have loved every single trip I have been to and would love to do so much more!

    Great knowing you Thunder Ice!
Hajra recently posted… Satisfying the Blogging SoulMy Profile

    • I was so confused about the list of blogs, Hajra! Some only had 7 and others had 15. I chose the latter just so I could recognize more bloggers. =) Teehee! I mean, I already cheated on my last award, listing 11 instead of 10. =P I figured I’d continue the trend. =)

Actually, Chinese names are almost always two characters. For some reason, they decided to choose to double my name. Not sure why. =P

  3. Try being ambidextrous. It is not unusual to hear “the other left” when people talk with you. (I do favor my left- in oh, so, many ways, but I can write with either hand and never learned how to golf or use tools with any special hand.)

Thanks for sharing these 15 fine folks with us…

Telling you a little “secret” of me: I am having my toilet papers facing downward too, and I go crazy every time I find it “the wrong way” at my friends’ houses. I really have to force myself NOT to turn them “right”. hehe
Virag recently posted… Da nails…My Profile

    • Thanks, Virag! And you’re soo welcome! =) I’ve been itching to find a way to recognize you and get more people over to your blog. =) I hope it encourages you to blog more and share more of your daughter’s art too. Hehe!

*High-five* on the toilet paper! =) And I thought I was crazy for wanting to turn toilet paper rolls around in friends’ houses too. =P

  5. Uh ooh!! Go Santy! Go Santy!! GO, GO, GO!! ;D That’s 4 freaking awards darling! I told you that YOU Freaking ROCK! :) Congratulations!! You are definitely deserving of them. I don’t think Roy will mind me saying this either…. I really missed you in your absence. I hope the search for the two of you went swell as well.

I look forward to reading the other blogs you shared as well. It might not be this week, because I’m still sorta pulling my hair out a bit on setting up the new site. Hopefully this one will do the trick for awhile at least .

Let’s see do we have anything else in common… Hmm. After reading the first one I have to admit Vanilla Ice popped into my mind. Do you know him? I wanted to break out and start singing, “Ice Ice baby…. Thunder… Ice Ice baby.” :o ) All in good fun of course.

It actually sounds like you learned to float and swim a lot sooner than I did. I didn’t learn until I joined the Navy. Even then, I had to be pushed into the water. They assumed that I would voluntarily jump off a 15 foot wall into the water without knowing how to swim; they were sadly wrong. If I recall correctly, I think either I or one of my friends took one of the Drill Sargent with us when they gave us a little nudge. Case in point, why it’s never nice to push. :D

Anywho, glad you came back to such excitement luv. Once again, Congrats to you! :)

Haha! And I definitely heard you singing to Vanilla Ice. That should be my theme song. =P

Wow! You are so daring to learn to swim as an adult! =) Haha! I’m so imagining you pulling the Drill Sargent in with you. =) Hilarious! Bet you taught them a lesson. =P

  7. Too funny… I totally do #6 as well. I always have to make an ‘L’ with my left hand to determine which way is left and which way is right. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
As for the toilet paper, my mom was anal about this, but the other way. The toilet roll always had to be placed so the paper came from the bottom. So, I was born and raised this way; however, as I have gotten older I have managed to let go of my toilet paper rules and am now more versatile in this regard and have actually started putting it your way!
    Congrats!

Hilarious! I had no idea that people could be anal about the toilet paper going the other way! =P I should learn to let go of my toilet paper rules too. =P Thanks for the encouragement, Karen. Hehe! Maybe I’m not so versatile after all. =P

  8. Hi Samantha!

  10. Awards from five bloggers. You are really popular! Congrats on that and following up on them. I wouldn’t know who to nominate – much less 15. Notice that Sonia is there. Another of our networking friends?

As for commonalities, we have quite a few though only one of those that you mentioned: calling your pet in Spanish motherese (so easy to fall into). Used to call my dog, “Mi wawacito” rough translation – “My little wow-wow.”

And yes! I got to know Sonia through your recommendation! I think you mentioned her a couple times — once because of her blog day post that you reposted. =) She is so amazing and I’m so glad you “introduced” us!

Haha! AWW! I want a wawacito too! =) I should start calling my kitties miaucitos. =)

  11. Congratulations on your award. I follow a number of blogs and yours, by far,is the best. I’m continually impressed by your intelligent and thought provoking ideas, and how hard you work at your computer networking. What do we have in common? Our total love for Peru and our preference to our own cozy nook over travelling.

By the way, i hope your most recent trip down the coast of Northern Peru was successful.Did you manage to get to Lambayeque and see the great new museum there?

    • Thanks so much, Vinny! What an amazing compliment! You have totally made my month, friend! =) I really appreciate your feedback and thanks for recognizing the work I put into my blog! I also love that we have Peru in common + how we enjoy creating our cozy nooks. =)

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to visit Lambayeque during this trip, but I hope to take all your suggestions into account over the next few trips or at least when I’m finally able to move and settle down in the North! =) Thank you so much again!

  12. Thanks for the shout out Samantha, so happy that you are passing this award along to others! Will have to stop by and check out some of these blogs that I’m not familiar with.

Do we have anything in common? Well yeah, the toilet paper! I’ll even be at people’s homes and when I don’t see it on there right I’ll change it. I know, I know, I’m really weird about that too and I have no idea why. I mean come on people, don’t you know how to put the darn roll on? Too funny!

Thanks for sharing more about you with us. I’m surprised that you really don’t enjoy traveling although you do it a lot. I enjoy traveling for pleasure but not real often so I can probably relate. I’m a home body! I know we have that in common too! :-)

That’s exactly it, Adrienne! I enjoy it more when I don’t travel too often and I find that I so look forward to heading home. =) That can be something positive. It makes me appreciate home more. =)

  13. Congratulations! And thank you for the passing on to me! :) I do the exact same thing with my hands when I need to tell left from right. lol That’s hilarious!

  14. The left hand makes an L? Well so it does! :p Congrats on your award, you are indeed versatile. I enjoyed learning these facts about you and I often wondered about the origin of your name. Thanks for introducing us to these bloggers and please, keep writing.! <3

  15. Hi Samantha, I’m with you on the toilet paper. Drives me nuts if it’s pointing the other way. Congratulations on the awards! You richly deserve them, my friend. Your blog is fascinating, insightful, welcoming and well-written.

  17. Congrats! You so deserve it. I am going to have to browse through that list of bloggers and check them out…they all sound fabulous. Like you, I struggle with right and left and have to often move them to figure it out. When I was a child, my grandparents gave me a ring to put on my left hand to help me tell the difference. Like Roy, I am actually ambidextrous which drove my athletics coaches nuts because I could never remember which way was my way…though my mother worked to make sure I wrote right handed. I love it when I’m dancing and the guy says, put your weight on your right/left foot. Because when I’m in THAT headspace I am even further from being able to translate what that means…best they just lead and don’t try talking me through it. ;) Love the 7 Things idea!

  24. #1 – Now I understand your Twitter name :P I love the combination of your two names :)

#3 – Does your cousin use PECS or a Dynamo? I always thought the Dynamo’s were awesome for non-verbal kids, but one of the parents I worked with years ago made a very good point – Her son has severe apraxia an cannot form words. He used PECS but his school was trying to transition him to a Dynamo. The mom was upset about it because while it’s more convenient to carry, it’s less reliable. She said, “imagine he goes into a busy McDonald’s and tries to order something with the Dynamo. They won’t be able to hear it!” I thought she made an excellent point. (Mind you, this was 10 years ago, so I have no idea what technologies are available now.)
#4 – LOVE that you baby talk to your kitties in Spanish!
#5 – Hahaha, I’m definitely with you on that one!

  28. Hi Samantha!

I thought that green award looked familiar;). Hajra “gave it” to me, too. Wow–I think it was months ago. Glad to see it’s still versatile and thriving.

    3). Is super efficient.
Why do I think the answer is # 3.

    • Wow! What a touching compliment, Sonia! That means a lot to me coming from you, a social media expert in my books! =) I hardly feel efficient. Maybe it’s more like I have a bit more time online than others. =) But efficiency is definitely a goal of mine! =)

  33. Love your names – thunder and ice! How great is that? Thank you for the award and the kind words, Sam, it’s been such a pleasure getting to know you :-) What we have in common: I too like the toilet paper DOWN. It is the correct way and I have been known to change it in peoples’ homes. Also, I work with children on the autism spectrum, and I just found out (as you know) that we are both interested in the history of World War 2. Isn’t it amazing how the internet brings us all together? I’m a firm believer that education, and the opportunity for people to learn about each other on a one-to-one or small groups basis, is the key to peace and harmony in the world. 34. Thunder and ice … too cool!

    You are too kind.

You have a way with words, Amorcito and all.

Since you mentioned toilet paper, I’ll share a lesson learned from Archie Bunker from a re-run of “All in the Family.” He said that toilet paper should always face towards the wall. In the picture above, I think it’s face away. His point was that it’s easier to tear, and it’s easier to always face downward … thus eliminating the problem you speak of ;)

  40. Aww! Thank you SOOO much, Kat! =) The rules are flexible, of course! I’ve seen some bloggers pass the award on to friends rather than recently discovered blogs. =) In any case, can’t wait to read your piece!

I definitely feel like I can relate to your story and blog in a personal way, Kat. =) What’s so amazing is how dedicated you are to your little guys even when I know how difficult it can be at times. Thanks so much for being such an inspiration!
